Careers Department
The Careers Department at Te Awamutu College caters for all students Years 9–13, predominantly concentrating on Years 11–13. Appointments can be made with Mrs Dickson, Careers Adviser, for group or individual consultations. Students are encouraged to plan their future directions carefully and are welcome to hard copies of material as well as the use of the Careers computers.
University preparation, Halls of Residence, Polytechnics and Earn to Learn opportunities are all advertised in the “Daily Notices”. Course selection (subject choices) are also important choices for young people.
Trades Academy
The Waikato Trades Academy is an opportunity for Year 11 students. Students apply at the end of Year 10 and are chosen in consultation with Year 10 Deans, Wintec and Mrs Dickson. Students attend Wintec 1 day per week for the year gaining NZQA Credits towards Level 2.
This is a two year course so students need to commit to this. Opportunities exist in the Trades and Service sectors.
Gateway
Gateway is an opportunity for Year 12 and 13 students to “taste” an industry of their choice for one day a week for ten weeks. Students need to commit to the 20 credits that accompany this experience.
STAR
STAR courses are one two day “tasters” at a Polytechnic or private provider. These courses are free and available to Years 11, 12 and 13 students.
Mrs Dickson is happy to speak to any student re Careers choice or future pathways.
